Do you know what's FOC?

I didn't know until I got into making creator owned comics.

My life used to be more comfortable when I worked for Marvel and only had to take care of doing my part, I received a script, drew the script, send the pages and start over again.

Now I am a responsible author, now I have to know what a FOC is.

Kelly Sue explains perfectly what is FOC here in her newsletter, but if you are as lazy as I am, I can paste it here for you:

FOC” stands for Final Order Cut-off. While it’s not exactly a “term of art” (since it’s mostly used within the comic book industry), it has a very specific meaning for comic book professionals. A book’s FOC date is the deadline by which retailers must submit their orders for that book to the distributor.

We talked about it in our minicomic and it is the reason why we've been Blueskying all week long.

We've shared come images here and there but let me centralize everything in here, first the covers.

Left to right:

David López: Yours truly.

David Lafuente: I have him on speed dial, he's the guy I go to when I have a doubt re: anything comic related, he's a savant and I have a YouTube channel with him.

Emma Ríos: She's a dual-class witch-fencer that lives in the magic lands of Galicia in the North Western part of Spain, her talent goes out of scale.

Álvaro Martínez Bueno: He's Multiclass but he doesn't like to talk too much about his former life. He's the best painter and the best dude, he's amazing the world with his Nice House on the Lake and on the Beach.

And then there are the Incentive covers, these are the ones you can buy for every 20 of the regulars you buy, it is crazy, but that's how it works.

Left to right:

Nicola Scott: She is the only non Spaniard artist doing covers for issue 1, she's made Historia with Kelly Sue and she must be a witch too cause she's made Black Magic.

Pepe Larraz: He's the biggest talent of the decade in Marvel, he's drawn everything there and has done everything better than anybody else, do you remember House of X? He built that world.

In The Mary Sue they've made an extended preview, here the pages they've shown:

Look at them… ain't them cute? See page 4?

We used panel two to link there the minicomic we made. KS says I was genius, I know I was just lazy.

About page 7, the kids go to their art school and I couldn't find an art school cool enough in Portland, why? because the art school I went to is the coolest you can find so I put mine, it's in Zaragoza, yes, it's a 1908 building, yes… but it has bees and an angel in the facade, you can't compete with that.

About the others let me share some process images.

In this first page I changed Riley's pose and the guitar, I had a hard time trying to find Riley's art style.

This one was crazy, I had to combine the regular comic style, reality as we're used to, Mom's art style (panel 3, that's like she sees herself), Mom's 90s photocopy fanzine style (panel 4) and how Riley draws her mom (panel 6).

This was easier than the ones before, it only has the difficulty of drawing Grim, Lil's Lil's Chihuahua Chinese Crested dog. It's taken me a few pages to learn to love that beast but now he steals the show (I think it's male, ask Kelly Sue).

Here's some art that I've done to help me find the right feel for the book.

I have done some extra work for the book, like this poster I made for the fanzine workshop we made in Books With Pictures in Eugene two months ago.

Speaking of fanzines, fanzines have a role in the book, my daughter does them (very well) and I made the cover for one of the Patty Cake ones back in the 90s.

I made a few stickers for the editorial group chat.

And I couldn't but pay a homage to some of my favorite memes.

I mean… I've been drawing many stupid things just because I love this book and I want to stay in it the longer I can, we've just started and I don't want it to end!

I am even making fanarts of my own book, I'm such a loser!

(Layout, color sketch, final illustration.)

While I was drawing comfortably at home Kelly Sue has been in all the podcasts, YouTubes and everywhere they allowed her in just to remind you that you are going to L-O-V-E FML because it is such a good book!
